Jeremiah Previews Christ

God had called Jeremiah while he felt too young to be a prophet. (Jer 1:4-6) His contemporaries did every possible thing to hinder his message and reject him and God who sent him. They doubted he was God's prophet, derided his message, mistreated him, taunted him and sought to destroy him. There was little prospect of his message being accepted. Jeremiah lived amongst the people, pleaded with them to return to God, sought their well-being, and prompted them to do right personally, corporately and nationally. He urged them to accept God's promised punishment and learn to obey God that it would go well with them. All these under divine providence led to the prominent way Jeremiah pointed to Christ Jesus. Jeremiah's personal suffering and rejection is a type of those experienced by Christ Jesus.

"God does not always reward the just in this world, for we were created, not for a temporal, but for an eternal happiness. But we may be sure that He will reward them in the next world by an "eternal weight of glory" (2 Cor. 4, 17). The just have to pass through many trials on earth. They may ... be persecuted and ridiculed for their faith, piety, or conscientiousness, but some day they will be exalted, and rewarded with everlasting happiness. The more good a man has done on earth, and the more he has suffered for the love of God, the greater will be his reward in heaven. "Blessed are they that suffer persecution for justice's sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are ye, when they shall revile you and persecute you, and speak all that is evil against you untruly, for My sake. Be glad and rejoice, for your reward is very great in heaven" (Mat. 5, 10 " 12). [No text indicates an earthly marriage but there are statements of parents, brothers and sisters. Note that John 3:29 refers to the spiritual bride of Christ: "He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom's voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled." This bride is not earthly but heavenly: "For I am jealous over you with godly jealousy: for I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ." (2 Cor 11:2); "And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband." (Rev 21:2); "And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb's wife." (Rev 21:9)]
